Before the Spanish Federation’s announcement of the squad for the Nations League, no one would have guessed Alejandro Balde would be left out. The left-back has been unarguably the best in Spain and one of the best in Europe this season.
The rise from La Masia
Alejandro Balde was already a top talent when still in the academy and the youngster climbed through the ranks of La Masia quickly. Initially, when called up to the first team by Xavi, Balde used to be sitting on the bench waiting for his chance. However, in the 2023 season, Xavi decided it was time for Jordi Alba to pass the torch to Balde. His explosiveness and athleticism took Barca’s attack to another level while also being solid defensively by closing down players as quickly as possible.
Reaching new heights under Flick
The La Masia graduate is on another level this season under Hansi Flick. Balde has gained back the confidence he lost after his injuries and looks dangerous every time he is on the ball. Improved dribbling, crossing, and ball-carrying has made him a key player of the squad. The youngster has 1 goal and 7 assists this season already, surpassing his best numbers ever with the first team. I do not understand why Luis de la Fuente decided to exclude a player of such quality from his squad.
