With another defeat, Barcelona’s recent La Liga struggles show no signs of easing. With a promising start to the season, scoring plethora of goals and rock-solid at defense, Barcelona seemed unstoppable. Recently they find themselves struggling for consistency and confidence.
Leganes triumph over BARCELONA
Yesterday Barcelona went up against CD Leganés who were 17th and battling to exit the relegation spot. As Hansi Flick was suspended he wasn’t on the touchline to manage the ongoing situation. Given Barca’s current La Liga run, this was a statement game for Barcelona-one which should have been easy 3 points and With Real Madrid dropping crucial points against Rayo, this was a golden chance for Barca to extend the gap, but failed to leverage the opportunity.
MATCH SUMMARY
The game kicked off with Barcelona conceding an early 4′ header by CD Leganés’ captain Sergio González. Barcelona dominated the first half of the game by keeping loads of possession and 2 golden opportunities missed by Lewandowski. In my opinion Lewandowski should’ve capitalized on both the chances as both were straightforward and a striker of his experience and quality should definitely net those. Barca suffered a setback with Lamine’s injury who couldn’t do much.
The 2nd half mirrored the first as Barcelona enjoyed the possession play but couldn’t convert their opportunities. Pedri was the only player who was all around the pitch and looking to put pressure on the opposition. Its 2024 and Barcelona still have no solutions to the low block tactic. This style is played by low-tier La Liga teams and forces Barca to just keep possession.
What’s going wrong?
Barcelona have secured just one win in their last 6 La Liga games which includes 3 losses and 2 draws, dropping a total of 13 points. In my opinion, Barca have lacked the mentality when facing lower-tier La Liga teams. Their performances against Real Madrid and Bayern were impressive, they now seem to be overshadowed by Barca’s recent struggles. Only a handful of individuals have shown their quality in these games, and as a result, Barca have failed to show performances as cohesive team.
From top to chasing
Barcelona enjoyed a commanding lead at top of La Liga for most of the season, sitting 6 points clear over Real Madrid (2nd) and 10 over Atletico (3rd) . But due to inconsistent performances and major injuries Barca suffered against lower end La Liga sides. The gap has now narrowed to just 1 point with Real Madrid (3rd) and levelled with Atletico (2nd) and both having 1 game in hand.
