A report by Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo claimed Barcelona are on the lookout for a young and talented keeper to strengthen Ter Stegen‘s backup and compete with him for the position.
Ter Stegen’s injury and Inaki Pena’s rise
After the injury of Ter Stegen in the beginning of the season, Inaki Pena had taken over as the main keeper for Barca. The youngster was doing relatively good for his age and experience apart from mistakes in some games. Pena continued to be the first choice keeper for Barca even after the signing of the Polish keeper Wojciech SzczÄsny.
Szczesny takes over
Slowly but gradually Wojciech SzczÄsny gained Hansi Flick’s confidence and gained starting position in the Champions League games. After some weeks, the Polish keeper was starting in the league as well with Inaki Pena sidelined completely. This really affected the youngster as he felt he had not made any mistakes to be retired to the bench and had heated arguments with Flick over the topic.
Should Barca sign another keeper?
A good competition with a prodigious keeper will be great both for Ter Stegen and the club’s future. However, in my opinion, Inaki Pena should be given time to develop, as he surely has the potential to fill in Ter Stegen’s shoes. Being a La Masia product, the youngster understands the club’s philosophy and play style and he is very good on the ball, a must-have skill if you’re going to be Barca’s keeper.
