Barca Only won 1 of their Last 8 Games in La Liga

Barcelona has always been a strong contender in La Liga and has kept arch-rivals Real Madrid on their toes every season. Yet, this season, the Blaugrana are almost gifting the league title with a significant decline from a considerable lead. Let’s talk about these recent shortcomings and explore what is holding the team back.

Lost Opportunities With Low Block Teams

Hansi Flick’s Barca has been Europe’s most formidable attacking side, yet the same team has struggled to score against low-block teams. This is very confusing as neither statistic complies. This Barcelona team has shown fluid passing, great positional play and attacking threat. It has destroyed European top-flight teams but has faced serious issues against rigid, low-block sides.

Whatever the case, teams like Getafe have found an effective plan against Flick’s Barca. First, they will absorb pressure and completely deny space to the Barcelona midfield and attack. Whenever an individual error or rebound gives them the ball, they will attack in numbers for a counterattack. The same plan even gave Simeone’s Atletico a win against Barca.

What’s Holding Barcelona Back?

This Barcelona side has everything needed for attack. They can create chances, have the talent to convert them and perform under pressure, too. Then what is holding these players back to score against these low-tier teams?

Flick, after this recent draw against Getafe, said:

“I believe we had many chances. We failed to score, especially in the first half. Then, regarding the speed of circulation, I think it’s something that needs to improve”.

I think Flick’s point makes sense, but Barcelona also has to start taking risks in these situations. Shots from outside the box have been non-existent. Then attacks through corners and set-pieces have been relatively poor. We also need a long ball expert who can switch the play with accurate long balls and create chances. And, of course, a dribbling winger on the left side with quick feet. I believe these issues must be adequately addressed, and Barca should craft a proper plan to infiltrate such stubborn La Liga sides, as this is holding the team back.

A Tale of Two Barcelonas

Barca’s epic performances in cup competitions this season have been so good that we almost forgot the league inconsistencies. While we have enjoyed the Copa Del Rey and Spanish Super Cup run so far, it is painful to see the league issues have not yet been resolved.

Flick’s Barca must improve in the league, as knockout format success is not enough. A club like Barcelona has to excel in all competitions, and if we want to dominate world football, the Spanish league is the first mountain to climb. Visca Barca!
