A knockout competition organized by Catalan Football Federation, Copa Catalunya is a bond between FC Barcelona and their Catalan identity. Clubs from all over Catalunya participate in the competition. FC Barcelona currently holds 8 titles in the competition since it’s introduction in 1989. Barca face their rivals Espanyol in the semi-final on 19th February in what could be an opportunity for Hansi Flick and his young players.
A chance for Flick to experiment
Copa Catalunya is considered more of an unofficial friendly rather than a must win competition among Barca fans and media. Xavi Hernandez and almost every coach at Barcelona used these matches to experiment with their players and tactics. Hansi Flick has an opportunity to test some alterations in his tactics and roles of his players on the pitch.
Game time for youngsters
This match can also give a chance for fresh La Masia graduates and young players that do not receive enough minutes due to the important fixtures. Players like Toni Fernandez, Pau Victor, Hector Fort, and Pablo Torre can get a chance to prove their worth and compete with the starting players. Ansu Fati who has not received minutes in so long from Hansi Flick can finally hope to make a statement performance against Espanyol and slow down Barca’s search of a left winger in the market.
