Barcelona has suddenly withdrawn from Nico William’s race and stopped looking for a new number nine in the coming summer. This has ignited a fierce debate, as both a winger and a striker have been on the Barca checklist for a long time. Will the club maintain the conservative signing approach and keep faith in the current players?
Barcelona Suddenly Let Go of Nico
The exciting Spanish winger Nico Williams has been on the Catalan radar long since the 2024 European championship. The player was an emerging Spanish talent in the Euros and has sought lots of attention. But the Blaugrana suddenly decided to take a U-turn on the 22-year-old and finally abandoned his pursuit (says Fabrizio Romano).
I think this is an extraordinary move, as Hansi Flick gave the winger the green light. It’s strange that Barca is backtracking from such a prime target, as a move for the left winger seemed like a very close call last summer. Maybe, considering Nico’s high release clause (€62M), it is more of a strategy than a surrender in the race by Barca.
Does La Masia Cover all Weak Areas of this Barcelona Team?
The talent of La Masia is truly undeniable. The team is highly made up of La Masia stars who carry the weight of most areas of the team. However, Barcelona relies too much on unproven stars. If we compare ourselves to arch rivals Real Madrid, their team is a perfect blend of youth, experience and stars.
Barca must look to sign some proven players, as most veterans of this current team are at the eclipse of their careers. The cult of La Masia is great, but trophies arent won with potential alone. Experience is also key.
Can Barcelona Afford to Delay Striker Reinforcements Until 2026?
The delay in signing a number nine is another huge news, as Lewandowski is set to turn 37 coming August. It seems Barca has faith to let Lewandowski lead their attack for one another season. While Lewandowski’s amazing form is commendable, it’s important Barca have a plan B in sleeve as well.
After so much scrutiny of center forwards, signing not even one in coming season might be another financial helplessness reason. Reports claim that Barca might try for Victor Osimhen atleast, but still nothing is confirmed. This seems more like a prayer, than a strategy.
