Barcelona’s Comeback Story: A Short Summary!

Hansi Flick’s appointment at Barcelona brought up many questions among the fans. Flick had no relation with Barcelona, no relation with La Masia, and no idea of the language. Leaving all behind, Hansi Flick has completely transformed this side, there is a sense of character in this team.

Xavi’s Era

1- 2021-2022

Xavi returned to the club as a legend, bringing hope for a club revival after the post-Messi era. Xavi inherited a poor and inconsistent squad from previous coach Ronald Koeman. Xavi drastically improved the team structure by promoting youth including Gavi and Nico. But Barcelona remained trophy less and crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in Group Stage, later failed to succeed in the Europa League as well.

2- 2022-2023

This was a period of brief success, where Barcelona fans thought Barcelona is back and ready to conquer Europe again. This season Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup and the La Liga title. Despite domestic success, Barcelona again had to play the Europa League and were knocked out by Manchester United. This was the period where Xavi introduced Lamine Yamal’s talent to the entire world.

3- 2023-2024

This was the period of pure decline and frustration for the club. Barcelona had to suffer injuries, inconsistent performances, and poor tactical display. Barcelona lost major games against PSG and Real Madrid, always being the weaker side on paper and in the game. Barcelona were knocked out of Champions League quarterfinals by PSG despite a 3-2 first-leg lead. They lost Copa del Rey semifinal to Athletic Bilbao. The only positive thing this season was the recognition of Pau Cubarsi.

Flick’s Appointment

When Flick came he did not make any promises or demand unreal transfers, he got to work and was fully committed to how to bring the best out of this messed up side. Flick completely changed the team structure. Now Barcelona have an intent when they have the ball, the possession has a certain purpose and they now attack fearlessly. The major change is when Barcelona do not hold possession, they now know how to maintain their formation and press effectively to regain possession.

Players have significantly improved under Flick including Raphinha, Pedri, De Jong, and Torres who play with more freedom and character. The mentality has been a huge part of the plan, whenever Barcelona concedes they look for direct goals instead of finding ways to get the goal.
Flick’s flexibility deserves credit, he knows how to cope up against a certain team. He knows when to shift the gears and when to hold back.

Flick’s Barca journey is nothing short of a fairytale, we hope we witness the treble and this form remains forever. When a team performs, a manager’s role on field is also key to winning games. Flick is one of the fewest manager who understands the game and has an idea on when to make impactful changes. This season has been a testament of Flick’s tactical approach towards game and his flexibility with Barcelona.
