After weeks of uncertainty and suffering, Barcelona have finally put an end to their registration saga. Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor are given temporary permission following an appeal to the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD).
Understanding the Registration Crisis
Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor’s future at Barcelona was on the line because of La Liga’s ruling on the salary cap. The debate was all about La Liga’s Financial Fair Play Ruling. The main aim of the Financial Fair Play rule is to make sure that football clubs do not spend more money than they earn. Barcelona needs to maintain the 1:1 rule to keep the players at the club.
Barca had filed a lawsuit against La Liga, claiming that they have the right to register Olmo, as La Liga previously refused to allow Barcelona to use more of Stegen’s salary cap, which was allocated for the registration of Wojciech Szczesny. This request was denied by La Liga and the RFEF.
Following the rejection of the first appeal, the club’s president, Joan Laporta, revealed that his team would use a legal argument that if La Liga blocks these registrations, it would violate the players’ right to work. This appeal was also denied.
To solve the 1:1 issue, the club decided to advance the negotiations for the VIP boxes deal. The deal was to transfer the VIP box commercialization for the future Camp Nou to investors from the Middle East, potentially generating up to €100 million.
Despite returning to the 1:1 criteria, La Liga and the RFEF rejected Barcelona’s appeal to register their players. These bodies rejected the registration because of articles that prevented players whose licenses had been revoked during the season from obtaining a new license with the same club.
The End
The last hope for the club was to go to court, expressing their confidence in the stance and to seek justice. Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) has granted Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor temporary permission to be registered.
Barcelona have also confirmed the news in a statement on the club’s official website:
“Good news for FC Barcelona. Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor have been registered for the League. This means that the two Barça players are available to Hansi Flick to play in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, January 12.
“On Wednesday, January 8, the Superior Sports Council ( CSD ) issued a precautionary order allowing Olmo and Pau Víctor to play. And, this Thursday, January 9, the two Barça players are now registered in the League. This allows them to wear the shirt again. It should be remembered that Barça has the Super Cup final scheduled for this Sunday.”
The issue is yet to be resolved, with a final resolution due by April 7th. Despite not being fully done Barcelona can play both players and continue the season with them. This is a huge boost for the team and Flick, this could be a big morale booster for further games.
