Barcelona has time until 31st December before the January transfer window opens to register the Spaniard. Barcelona will present a new lawsuit against La Liga in the lower court on 30th December, the day before the registration deadline.

Why did Barcelona appeal?

Barca had filed a lawsuit against La Liga, claiming that they have the right to register Olmo, as La Liga previously refused to allow Barcelona to use more of Stegen’s salary cap, which was allocated for the registration of Wojciech Szczesny. This request was denied by La Liga and the RFEF.

Joan Laporta revealed that his team will use a legal argument that if La Liga blocks these registrations, it would violate the players’ right to work. This similar argument was stated in a similar situation when Gavi’s registration was pending.

main reason for this issue

The issue exists due to a La Liga rule. This is the Financial Fair Play Ruling. The main motive of the Financial Fair Play rule is to make sure that football clubs do not spend more money than they earn.

This is the 1:1 rule. It is compulsory for La Liga clubs to maintain the spending-to-earning ratio at 1:1. This conflict exists as La Liga and Barcelona do not agree on how the club’s financial situation should be calculated.

alternative ways Barca is going to opt

The solution proposed for the situation is the following: revolving the sale of Barça Studios. In 2021, the club sold almost 50% of its stake in its audiovisual division, but the full payment is still pending. Since that time, Barcelona has been looking for a sponsor to make a difference, but it is still pending.

Another potential Plan B the club might go for is selling the VIP boxes in yearlong commitments, but the problem in both cases is the time the club needs to negotiate the deals. The deadline is very close.

From the player’s camp, they have their complete trust in the club and are focused on the next games.
