Flick’s Game Awareness: A Trait That deserves Credit

Barcelona has played Atletico thrice this season, and all three games have brought thrilling results. Barcelona showcased their mentality in a dramatic La Liga encounter on March 16, 2025, where Barcelona overturned a 2-0 deficit to a 4-2 comeback at the Metropolitano Stadium. The main thing behind this comeback was Hansi Flick’s correct use of substitutions.

Early Setback

The game started with an end-to-end game, Barcelona had few clear chances in the first few minutes which they couldn’t convert lacking the finishing touch. The middle of the first half was quite poor from Barcelona’s standard.

At the 44′ minute of the game, Lewandowski skied a left-foot shot on which Atletico started quickly and scored on the counter. Julián Alvarez scored a right-footed shot from the centre of the box with assistance from Giuliano Simeone. Barcelona were 1-0 down at the end of the first half.

Impact of Substitutions

Right after Barcelona conceded the second goal, Lewandowski pulled a brilliant finish controlling the ball off his chest and finishing with his left in the 71st minute.

The introduction of Ferran was pivotal, Atleti were playing a low compact block from the start of the second half, and Ferran who was initially playing as a LW was asked to play central. This provided Barcelona with a 4th attacker.

In the 78th minute, Ferran touched Raphinha’s precise cross into the net, levelling the score. This goal not only reignited Barcelona’s momentum but also showcased Flick’s game awareness.
