Frenkie de Jong finally received his long-awaited start by Hansi Flick in a match of much importance. The round of 16 of Copa del Rey against Pellegrini’s Real Betis was a major test for the Dutch midfielder to prove he still has it in him to be an important player for the Blaugrana.
The box-to-box midfielder
Frenkie was everywhere on the pitch, collecting the ball from the back line and constantly breaking lines to reach the rest of the midfield and attack. Always available behind the attack as an extra man when Barcelona are on attack.
Covering for the progressing defenders
Flick’s system encourages the centre-backs to progress with the ball when the opposition decides to cover the midfielders instead of pressing the defence. Frenkie was not operating higher up the pitch when Barca was playing out from the back. Hence, he was almost out of play when a defender progressed with the ball. He decided to be useful in this situation and cover up the space left behind by the defender to be prepared for any counter-attacks if possession is lost.
Providing chances upfront
Frenkie was not only exceptional in his defensive duties but also helped out in the attack breaking Pellegrini’s defensive lines. The Dutch maestro even assisted Lamine Yamal for a goal but an unlucky offside was detected in the buildup.
Frenkie de Jong is an extremely versatile player who is extremely important for Flick’s system. Players like him provide a team with more than what meets the eye. He also increases the quality of Barca’s squad depth which is essential for any squad to win trophies.
