Hansi Flick’s lack of trust

However this season after coming back from injury the Dutch midfielder has not received the expected game time under Hansi Flick, often getting to play the last minutes of a match. Reports from Fernando Polo suggest De Jong is no longer viewed as a crucial or starting player for the team. Instead, he is seen as almost a secondary option as the club now has many midfielders who are considered to be ahead.

Barca doubts that De Jong will improve his performance dramatically. The club believes he lacks the intensity needed to play at the level expected by their coach leading to the club unlikely to renew his contract and will instead look to sell him. They want to avoid letting him leave for free in 2026.

However, if Barca decides to sell him and he refuses, the consequences could be tough. He could face a season with little to no playing time, which would be problematic ahead of the World Cup.
