Lewandowski's lack of finishes costs Barca

Lewandowski’s bad form costs Barca again

  • Barca slips points once again in La Liga after losing 2-1 to Atletico Madrid by a late winner by Alexander Sorloth
  • The same man who handed Barca a late goal to make it 5-3 in his time at Villareal last season.
  • Robert Lewandowski on the other hand was incapable of converting chances at the other end.

Beginner’s Luck:

At the start of the season, Lewandowski seemed to be back in form scoring goals for fun and confident against any keeper. Till the end of November, the Polish striker had bagged 15 goals in just 13 games in La Liga. Ahattrick against Deportivo Alaves and brace against Villareal, Sevilla and traditional rivals Real Madrid.

The Champions League witnessed a similar Lewandowski as he has secured 7 goals in 6 games. Scoring once against his former club and a brace against Young Boys, Red Star Belgrade and Brest.

The Cold Winter:

December arrived and the Catalan Giants lost their winning ways. Creating chances did not seem to be a problem but capitalizing on them was a different story. Robert Lewandowski missed major chances in La Liga resulting in Barca dropping crucial points, so much so that they have only managed to secure 8 points in November and December combined. Lewandowski is still way ahead in the race for the Pichichi with 16 goals but that is not the list he tops in La Liga. Lewandowski has missed the most Big Chances (14), a spot that he shares with the Los Blancos forward Kylian Mbappe.

Time for Barca to move on?

Robert Lewandowski is 36 years old and is not on the same level as his prime at Bayern. FC Barcelona needs to sign a striker in the winter market to bring on when he isn’t delivering. He has to accept a similar role to Luka Modric at Real Madrid, playing only when he is needed.

There are a lot of options in the market available, the most notable among them being the Swedish striker for Sporting Viktor Gyökeres. He has been on the radar of big European clubs for a while now, especially after his hattrick against Pep Guardiola’s Man City. He has scored 27 goals in 25 games this season and has a market value of €75M.

A cheaper option would be bringing back Vito Roque but he seems to be in poor form at Real Betis.
