Gavi’s masterclass against Betis

Pablo Gavi came back from his injury and since then the La Masia graduate has struggled to regain his spot in the starting lineup.

In Dani Olmo’s absence, it is a very difficult choice for Flick to make who plays as the attacking midfielder. Fermin Lopez has been in excellent form and Pablo Torre has impressed every time he has stepped on the pitch. However, against Real Betis Flick trusted Gavi to start.

The 20-year-old midfielder did not disappoint. Gavi put on a man-of-the-match performance with an 8.2 rating on FotMob. Gavi was the most fouled player in the game (4 times). Gavi had 92% passing accuracy while he completed 6 passes into the final third. He created 2 chances and also played 4/4 (100%) long balls.

This was one of the rare games where Pedri was overshadowed by another midfielder, and Frenkie was not the best in defense. Gavi put on a complete performance where he contributed defensively with his intensity. He made 10 recoveries as he tracked back to shut down counterattacks from Real Betis. Fermin Lopez and Pablo Torre remain important players as attacking options for Hansi Flick, but Gavi proved his critics wrong vs Betis and showed the world once again why he is a Golden Boy award winner.
