Barcelona’s transfer strategy won’t be a lot different from last season in 2025/26. However, a few important signings will be needed if the Catalans seriously aim to lift the UCL. The Blaugrana management is focused on prioritizing defence over attack, and this makes sense. Let’s break down how these decisions could shape up Barca’s future coming season.
Operation Reece James: Does he Fit Flick’s Tactical Idea?
Barcelona is once again looking to solidify the right-back spot, as Jules Kounde has no backup. The Frenchman has been playing a big chunk of games, and that has backfired for Barca at the worst possible stage this season. Therefore, Laporta and Deco have been silently planning a big move to bring the Chelsea captain, Reece James, to Barcelona.
James is a prolific right-back. He is very strong in his tackles and lightning quick in recoveries. The Englishman is only 25 and at his prime right now. Apart from his defensive side, his real ability lies in his offensive threat. He’ll be a menace with Yamal for defenders on Barca’s right, and that is why, if he stays fit, Reece James perfectly fits Flick’s team.
Fullbacks are the Real Priority: Lewandowski Stays
Robert Lewandowski isn’t going anywhere. The idea of Isaak and Gyokeres might be over as Robert is set to stay till 2026. Ferran Torres, who has proven himself, will be his reliable backup. That means Barca will not be investing in a new striker right now. The Blaugrana are prioritizing defence, especially the full-back spots.
I think that is very sensible decision because Barcelona’s both full-backs got injured against Inter in the semi-finals. With new full-backs, the bench strength will massively boost and competition will be greater. These will be ‘good’ problems as the squad will take shape for competing and winning the much awaited UCL trophy.
The Yamal-James Right Flank Partnership
Now that the Barca attack is set to stay the same, and the defence likely to get a boost, let’s analyze an interesting partnership. The Yamal-James duo at Barcelona’s right flank. Both are fantastic offensively and their combination could be something epic. That is because defenders would not get a clue who to mark. Reece James is lightening quick, maybe even quicker than Balde. He can also cross the ball with pace and precision.
And Yamal is a dribbling master; a true baller. Both of them could connect to unlock even the strongest defences and terrorize opponents. It would be a dream duo, and I hope one day we can witness them together.
Julian Alvarez in 2026?
The only striker that Barcelona is thinking of signing is Julian Alvarez. However, the Catalans cannot afford him right now. He will be a big-money transfer,r and before getting his signature, Barca needs to fix their finances and defence. A full-back like Reece James might be the only move Barca can make in the summer as of now.
If Barca nail this signing, they’ll be immensely stronger next season. Then, in 2026, the Blaugrana can go all in for Operation Alvarez. But first, they have to spend wisely and make more money.
