Hansi Flick’s Approach to Set-Pieces: A Tactical Breakdown

Hansi Flick uses a highly disciplined system of set pieces for his Barcelona side. The men responsible for taking free kicks are Raphinha and Pedri.

While Pedri takes long free kicks due to his long ball accuracy, Raphinha steps up to take the short free kicks in an attempt to get on the score sheet. The Brazilian is by far the best free-kick taker for Barca.

How Hansi Flick gets the most out of corners

Raphinha and Pedri share the corners, although Lamine Yamal often gets a chance to play in the cross to find a teammate in the box.

Hansi Flick instructs his players to fill in the box when a set piece is being played. This provides the set piece taker with many options to choose from. Although the opposition may counterattack, Flick trusts his men to track back in time and shut down any threats.

Barca attack corners by 2 strategies, while the ball is typically swung outside. In the first plan, the ball is sent to the near post while 2-3 players make runs towards the far post. This drags the defenders away from the cross while a player makes a run to the near post to score.

In the second plan, Barca players form a group inside the box of usually 3 players. 2 players stand on the edge of the box while Lamine Yamal places himself for a short cross so the opposition doesn’t have a numerical superiority in the box. 2 of the 3 players in the group then make a run towards the near post while one 1 runs towards the far post. This allows players to lose their markers. The player then heads it in the centre for his teammates to score.
