According to multiple reports, Inigo Martinez is highly likely to be called up by the Spanish national team for the next international break.
A backup signed from Athletic Bilbao
The Basque-origin player was signed by Xavi HernĂĄndez in the July of 2023 as a backup centre-back. He had promising minutes under Xavi’s reign but was a secondary option to Ronald Araujo. Fans often considered selling the centre-back a good option to make money. Despite the setbacks, Inigo kept on working hard and improving, waiting for his chance while sitting on the bench.
Reborn under Hansi Flick
When Hansi Flick arrived in Barcelona, Ronald Araujo was still out and injured. Hansi Flick trusted in the experienced Inigo Martinez to accompany the young prodigy in the defense. Since then, Basque defender has been an undisputed starter in Hansi Flick’s side. An experienced veteran who has mastered the art of offside trap to deny the opposition catching Barca on the counterattacks.
Inigo had pulled out of the 2020 Euros due to mental and physical issues and was not a part of the plan in the World Cup and the 2024 Euros. Now Inigo Martinez is looking like a promising candidate to be the starting centre-back for the coming international tournaments alongside Pau Cubarsi. I Cubarsi is expected to be a very important player for the Spanish national team for his ability to make line-breaking passes.
