Like most transfer windows, the January transfer window has also been a dry spell for Barca. However, the Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku has been offered to Barca as the Belgian is quite ‘unhappy’ with his playing time.
What could this move mean for Barca? Would it be a smart move for both parties, or considering Doku’s injury record and finishing issues, is it a deal destined to fail?
Jeremy Doku To Barca: What Could It Mean?
FC Barcelona has been looking to add depth to their attack, as speculations of a Rashford and Gyokeres move have been made a lot over the past couple of months. Now that another exciting player, Jeremy Doku, is linked to Barca, does this move add value to the team?
The Belgian is a dribbling wonder. He has pace, dribbling ability and is a one-on-one expert. Barcelona, who only has one natural winger, i.e., Yamal, in the squad right now, needs a proper winger like him who could take players on and bring the much-needed width on the left flank.
While the move is exciting, and Barcelona could add more attacking options, it does not offer a solution to our current problems, which include defensive vulnerability and some inconsistency in the midfield.
Opportunity for Doku Or Another Bench-Warming Spell?
Doku’s frustrations at City are understandable. Since the arrival of the Egyptian star Omar Marmoush, his playing time has been dramatically reduced. Also, Guardiola’s preference for tactical discipline over Doku’s exciting flair is another factor in the constant benching of the Belgian.
But what would happen if he comes here at Barca? With players like Ferran Torres, Yamal, Raphinha and Victor, Doku would have another struggle to prove his worth.
Doku has been inconsistent this season and has an alarming injury record. If he fails to get enough time here, this move would be another ‘bench-warming’ spell for the Belgian rather than an interesting development.
Can Barca Afford a Luxury Signing Like Doku?
Barcelona’s financial difficulties are not a secret. We have been struggling with salary issues, and adding Goku’s wages, even for a six-month loan spell, could complicate matters more.
Barca has failed to offload Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia this January, and the 1:1 rule could become endangered with the excessive wages of Doku, who receives £50,000 per week.
I think it would not be wise to stretch the budget for a temporary signing like this, and we have other areas of the squad that need reinforcement.
The January transfer window, which looked to be an offloading opportunity, could burden an already struggling Barcelona.
Jeremy Doku to Barca looks like an exciting prospect. But signing a temporary deal with Barca for an injury-prone, inconsistent player won’t be wise. What do you guys think? Would you like to see the Belgian in the Barcelona shirt?
