In July 2022, FC Barcelona and Sevilla FC reached an agreement for the transfer of French defender Jules Koundé. Jules Koundé has been one of the best performers for Barcelona since joining, his dedication is visible on the field and during training but still, the defender doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
From Center-Back to Right-back
Jules Koundé was brought to Barcelona to fill the void at defense as Barcelona conceded a whopping 38 goals in La Liga in 2021. Barcelona’s defense at that time was in a poor state with inconsistent players at defense. Players like Umtiti, Pique, and Lenglet were not good enough to compete.
Jules Koundé started his Barcelona journey as a center-back but due to the club lacking a reliable right-back. Sergi Roberto and Héctor Bellerín were inconsistent, and Xavi preferred a more solid defensive option. Koundé had to shift his role.
Another reason for this shift was due to many injuries in the squad. Sometimes, Ronald Araujo also played as a right-back but he was needed for a more central role. On the other hand, Xavi needed a more defensive right-back who can also provide pace, Kounde was the best option.
Playing the most minutes
Kounde was the outfield player with the most minutes (6,522) played in 2024, with 73 percent of that being back-to-back minutes. Last year the defender made 51 back-to-back appearances; a match played within five days of the previous one. Credits: FIFPRO
This stat is not normal, with many players complaining about the number of matches increasing each season. Koundé being the player to play at one of the most difficult positions in football, never complains about it. His remarkable endurance and performances have been underscored by FC Barcelona and the French National Team. Many players deny playing friendly international games due to fatigue, Koundé always plays for France.
His Development under Flick
During Koundé’s time in Sevilla, he was a complete central defender, after his successful shift of position under Xavi, Koundé’s improvement each season is unreal.
Under Hansi Flick, Koundé has shifted his role from a defensive fullback to an inverted midfielder. Koundé not only contributes defensively but he has been essential for the attack as well. The Frenchman has ten goals and assists this season. Koundé has been asked to open direct passing lanes from the right flank, this opens space for Lamine Yamal up front to create further chances.
Koundé has been making powerful runs inside and at wide of the opponent’s box, this allows Lamine Yamal with options at the right flank. His role this season complements Lamine extremely well.
