Just like Barcelona has a soft corner for teams who wear the white jersey, Real Madrid has a similar situation with VAR. Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League winning formula has worked again. Hats off to all the 12 men of Real Madrid—Oops! I mean 11. Real Madrid defeated Atletico at Wanda Metropolitano in a nail-biting tie that was decided on penalties.
What Happened?
When football fans hear the word “Controversy or Corruption” around them, the first thing that comes to mind is “REAL MADRID”.
There is no doubt the 120 minutes of the match were pretty exciting and a proper nail-biter, but the moment which destroyed the beautiful game was during the penalty shoot-out.
When Alvarez stood up to take his penalty, due to the area near the penalty spot being a little slippery Alvarez slipped, causing him to make contact with the ball twice (that is what the referees say). But as we all can see with our naked eye, Alvarez only made a single touch with the ball. The most hilarious bit is that the decision was made in just a few seconds by the VAR.
This is not a small thing to consider, it’s a team’s qualification-deciding chance VAR should’ve looked at this in a bit of detail.
A Second Chance?
There is a rule during penalties, if a goalkeeper is a step ahead of the goal line and saves the penalty, the benefit of the doubt will go towards the keeper and the penalty will be redone instead of the goal being given if the shot is on the target.
It was clear that Alvarez slipped by accident and if he touched the ball twice, the penalty should’ve been retaken.
This marks another example of a moment of disgrace by Real Madrid. Do let us know your thoughts in the comments. To be honest, Real Madrid has normalised the tradition of edging in games with the help of the referee.
