Revival or Regression? Will Flick put his faith in De Jong?

THE DE JONG SAGA TAKES A TURN

The 27-year-old Dutch Midfielder joined the Blaugrana back in 2019. Since then, he has always been up the pecking order in the midfield. However, he picked up a severe ankle knock in April which sidelined him for 5 months. Although he has started a few matches, Flick does not seem to completely rely on the former Ajax man.

What does the future hold for Frenkie?

A MORE ADVANCED ROLE MIGHT SUIT FRENKIE

De Jong’s style of play at Barça has always been defensive. His role under all previous managers has been to control the flow of the game and help with build-ups. He has even helped Barça by becoming a center back at times.

On the contrary, a much higher role up the pitch might suit Frenkie more. The Dutchman thrived in Ajax by playing as an offensive-type midfielder and seemed to enjoy that role. Flick might help De Jong find his rhythm back through this move. However, this would require the Dutchman to work hard under pressure and Flick’s complete trust.

CAN FLICK TURN THINGS AROUND FOR FRENKIE?

De Jong’s game time under Flick has been quite brief. He has been more of a substitute rather than a starter due to his injury and, of course, Marc Casado’s good form. De Jong’s performances have also not been up to the mark. The Dutchman has not shown enough intensity and even gave away a crucial penalty last week. He has also received a few boos from fans as a result.

However, Flick could turn the tables in these circumstances. De Jong seems to be in a similar situation as Dembele was a few seasons back, and we all saw how Xavi unlocked his full potential. The ball is in Flick’s court as things can be worse for Frenkie as he seems quite disappointed now.

FRENKIE SEEMS TO BE UNHAPPY: CULERS NEED TO CALM DOWN

Reports claim that Frenkie has shown disappointment after him being dropped against Leganes. The Netherlands international has also not renewed his contract while receiving a high salary. To make matters worse, fans have also been quite lethal to De Jong. The Dutch star seems to be under immense pressure.

I believe the fans should show a tad bit of leniency to Frenkie. The guy has been with Barça through thick and thin, and deserves more chances under Flick. As a culer, I want to trust the process and Frenkie. Another guy who also needs confidence from the culers is Ansu Fati. You can enjoy some interesting analysis of Fati’s future here.
