South Korean Star Linked to Barca, But a Major Hurdle Emerges

Barcelona’s hopes of securing Son-Heung Min have somewhat dashed as Spurs have announced his renewal till 2026. Should Barca still go for Son, and if yes, then what could he bring to the table?

Spurs Trigger Son’s Contract Extension Till 2026

Barca’s hopes of signing Son-Heung Min decreased when Spurs announced Son’s contract extension about three hours ago.

Initially, Son’s contract was set to expire at the end of this season. This made him a potential bargain in the transfer market and was definitely on Barca’s radar.

However, the 32-year-old will remain at the club for another year. This renewed contract means that Son’s value will increase, and Barcelona’s hope of getting him for a nice deal has been over. The Catalans could still negotiate, but the move will be much more complicated now.

What Can Son-Heung Min Bring To The Barca Attack?

Son-Heung Min is a very versatile left-winger known for his fantastic finishing and pace. The South Korean could bring the much-needed finishing quality and the final third gameplay Barca has been lacking lately. He is excellent in one-on-ones and dribbles the ball nicely, too.

Son can also play across multiple attacking positions. While originally a winger, he can also shift as a center forward and provide flexibility and options to Flick. He is an experienced player and could prove key in big moments for this young Barca side.

If Son comes to Barca, he can directly impact the team and might become a starter on the left wing. He is a sharp player and can be handy in breaking down stubborn La Liga defenses.

Barcelona’s Decision: Should Barca go for Son?

Should Barca keep pursuing him now that Son’s contract extension has been confirmed? My answer would be no. The reason is that Barca have finally gotten back to the 1:1 rule. Making a big money move for a 32-year-old, who is undoubtedly a quality player, might be a gamble. Son has been injury-prone and is nowhere near his best these days.

The club might still explore possible negotiation avenues and look for a transfer next year as his deal ends.

Alternate Options For Barca

Alternatively, Barca might need to shift focus to some other, younger target. Players like Rafael Leao and Khivcha Kvaratshkelia are already linked with Barca. Another linked player is Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, who has shown hesitation in renewing with the Reds. If Barca were to invest, these options could be better as the players are young and in their prime.

Son Heung-Min might be a good option for Barcelona, but only if a good deal is secured. Having him on a big money move might not be a good move for the Blaugrana, as financial issues still loom over us.
