Reports claim that Marc-Andre Ter Stegen could unexpectedly return by the Champions League quarter-finals in April. Wojciech Szczesny, who has recently become a fan favourite through his brilliant displays, now faces uncertainty. Will Ter Stegen reclaim his number one sport, or is it Szczesny’s earned spot now? Here’s what Barcelona must consider going forward.
Should Ter Stegen Walk Straight Back Into the XI or Earn His Place?
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been Barcelona’s undisputed no. 1 for almost a decade. But should he automatically reclaim his spot after a long injury layoff? Wojciech Szczesny has stepped up impressively for Barca and showed immense composure, experience and even better distribution.
Of course, if Ter Stegen returns during the current season, he will be down the pecking order. The German must prove himself in training before regaining his starting position. Maybe a fully fit Ter Stegen is still the superior option for regular league matches but for the Champions League? Ter Stegen is no longer a reliable option for Barca, fit or not.
Szczesny’s Short-Term Deal: Backup, Starter, or Retirement Again?
Szczesny was never meant to be Barca’s long-term solution. The Polish keeper came out of retirement for this opportunity and has done astonishingly well so far. The Catalans are unbeaten with the keeper on their goals, and this has made Barca look for a contract renewal for another year.
However, this makes Ter Stegen’s future uncertain. The German might not accept a bench role for the next season, and he might walk away if Szczesny renews. This will be a tricky situation if it occurs, but I believe that the club could carve out a hybrid role for both keepers if they agree. Szczesny could become the Champions League starter, and Ter Stegen can man the Barcelona net for league games. But this will be highly unlikely as both keepers are starters and do not prefer sitting on bench.
Will Flick Stick with Szczesny or Restore Ter Stegen’s No. 1 Status?
Although it’s a long way to go, it’s interesting to analyze: would Flick stick with Szczesny or restore Ter Stegen’s spot immediately for him next season? It’s no secret that Flick does not make decisions based on public pressure; he plays who he believes is best for the team. So, this question will only be answered with Ter Stegen’s training and performances.
If Ter Stegen is 100% ready, Flick will give him chances and might put him back. But if there’s any doubt, Szczesny could continue. I think if Szczesny’s current season ends on a high, it will be really tough for Ter Stegen to get back on top.
The goalkeeping war at Barcelona will heat up as soon as ter Stegen returns. While Szczesny is currently the undisputed starter for the Catalans, let’s see if he continues to perform at the highest level.
