The president of FC Barcelona is in muddy waters. Joan Laporta’s biggest test has been Olmo’s registration, and the deadline looms over his head. La Liga has officially removed Dani Olmo from the squad. With huge criticism from fans, opposition, and the press, Laporta’s reign might be near it’s end. Let’s take a look why.
A Series of Bad Decisions: Joan Laporta’s Future
The Registration Fiasco
Barcelona’s €55m signing of Dani Olmo was a statement of intent by Laporta. However, the Barca president has failed to register Olmo within the Spanish league’s rules. This might waste the expensive signing of a star player as the player might leave for free.
If Olmo leaves, per his exit clause, he will receive a €48m lump sum of unpaid wages from the club. This means Barca will face a €103m financial failure, which has infuriated fans and stakeholders.
A €200m Deal Cut in Half?
Barca’s desperation in registering Olmo made them sell 20 years of VIP seating rights to a Qatari company for €100m. This is half the amount previously negotiated, which was €200m. The company took advantage of the club’s weak situation and bought the seats for half the price.
This potential €100m loss could add to the growing criticism of Laporta.
Political Rivals Unite: No Confidence Vote
Victor Font and Joan Camprubi, Laporta’s opposition, have united to seize fans’ support. The Si al Futur and Som un Clam factions are busy organizing press conferences to highlight Joan Laporta’s failure as president.
The opposition parties hope to get a “no-confidence vote” for Laporta. If these rivals successfully gather 15% signatures from Barcelona members (with a 2/3 majority), such a vote can be enforced.
Laporta’s Last Stand
Although Laporta is a clever politician, this might be the final nail in the coffin. This saga has proved to be a massive crisis for Laporta’s Barca, and the outcome of this saga might be pivotal for the president’s future.
Joan Laporta might never forget Dani Olmo, as his only major signing this summer has become a headache for him.
