In the season 2008/2009 FC Barcelona recorded one of their biggest wins in an El Classico. Pep Guardiola’s side trashed the galactico’s 6-2 and placing a seal on their title win. A year that would end up as a legend in the history of the game as Pep’s side would go on to clinch 6 titels in a calendar year.
Match formations
Pep Guardiola set up his side in a traditional 4-3-3 while Juande Ramos opted for a 4-4-2. Sameul Eto was playing up front as the striker but after a while he shifted wide ride and Messi came central to play as a false 9.
Madrid open the scoring
Ramos exploits the space Left by this formation and plays a cross inside the box. Gonzalo Higuain is at the right place at the right time and heads it home.
Barcelona replies
Messi and Theirry Henry answer back when Henry plays a back pass to messi and then makes a run towards the box. Messi cooly chips it over two defenders and into the path of Henry who finishes it Past Casillas from a very tight angle.
The Captain steps up
Puyol announces to Madrid they’re not the only ones with defenders who can attack when Xavi has a free kick just outside the top left corner of the box. He guides the ball right to Puyols head who smashes it past Casillas.
The genius of Xavi
Xavi creates another goal out of nothing again as he presses a Los Blancos defender and gained possession just outside the box and slid it through for Messi. Messi took a little run, thought about passing it to xavi running beside him in support but finishes it past Casillas to give Barca their 3rd goal.
Madrid pull one back
Los Blancos show a hope of making a comeback when Arjen Roben whips in a quick cross from a free kick on the right flank and Ramos heads it in.
Henry hungry for more
Messi drops deep again and receives a pass then repeated the same to play Henry through on goal. This time Casillas attempts to close the gap between them quickly but the Frenchman slides it through him again and get the 4th goal for Barca.
Xavi spins away
Xavi receives the ball in a central position just outside the box and gets surrounded by two defenders who he spins away from and play the ball into the path of Messi who scores with a close post finish.
Pique gets in on the act
At this point in the game Barca players get in queue to get on the score sheet and pique risks leaving his defensive duties behind to join and attack. Eto running with the ball on the right flank plays in a cross for him but Casillas gets his hand in the way. However it is’nt enough as the ball falls to piques who makes a turning shot towards goal and it works. Barcelona defeat Real Madrid on their home 6-2. A humiliation that still remains one of the biggest scorelines in rivalries.
