Leo Messi throughout his career at FC Barcelona was time and time again busy with breaking records. 91 goals in a year, the most goals in La Liga, the most assists in La Liga, and so on. Setting a new record every other season had become a norm for the Argentine magician.
Rumors of drifting away from Barca
In Aug 2020 news came out of the Camp Nou which sank every Culer’s heart. Leo Messi wanted to leave FC Barcelona and find a new challenge. Rumours were around that he was not satisfied with the recent performances of the team and the management. A big blow in the Champions League by Bayern’s 8-2 trashing of the Catalan giants. Messi was also not a big fan of the new coach Ronald Koeman and was said to have had several arguments with the Dutch manager about tactics and player management. The most infamous case was the departure of Luis Suarez. In the end, however, the Argentine decided to stay.
Greatness surpasses greatness
Messi still stayed at the club long enough to score goals that crowned him as the player with the most goals for a single club. This record was previously held by the Brazillian legend Pele who had bagged 643 goals for Santos.
On 22 December 2020 in a La Liga match against Real Valladolid Leo Messi scored his 644th goal for FC Barcelona just before Christmas and gave himself the gift of another record. Leo Messi ended up extending that number to 672 by the time of his tragic departure from Barcelona arrived. It seems impossible that any other player will ever dethrone La Pulga from the throne of most goals for a single club. A record that was another gem in his crown as the greatest player of all time.
