Barcelona has had a tremendous start to the 24/25 season, crushing all heavyweights in all competitions. Barça defeated Real Madrid in La Liga and Bayern Munich in the UCL, and both were resounding victories. Talking specifically about La Liga, Barça had such a great start and were supposed to be 10 points clear on the points table by last month.
So, what is going wrong?
POSSIBLE REASONS OF THIS DIP IN FORM
Has Flick’s highline become too obvious for La Liga teams?
Barça started dropping points since November, with the loss against Sociedad. And now, Barça dropped points against the 15th placed Leganes. All matches had many things in common, like Barça having most of the possession and slow buildups. This has its dangers as teams counter attack on our high line.
I think most of these La Liga teams have figured out that Flick’s high line can have its vulnerabilities. The high line, which was our most crucial tactic for the better part of the season until now, might have become too predictable.
Los Colchoneros join the title race
Barça might be under somewhat pressure as Los Colchoneros have picked the pace. Simeone’s Atletico is also insisting for top spot, other than Madrid of course. Now this toe-to-toe race mid-way of the season will be a key factor in determining the La Liga champions this season. This young Barça has now lost its cushion of points and will be tested well in the next half of the season.
Squad needs rotation: Time for other players to step up
The first half of the season is almost complete. Being the most offensive team in La Liga this season, it is safe to remark that the boys have been up to the mark.
However, the defeat against Leganes was officially the first defeat in which Lamine Yamal started. This shows we are in a desperate need of rotation and fresh legs.
The midfield also needs rest as Olmo did not seem up-to-the-mark as well, having missed a crucial chance. It’s time for Gavi and co. to take control. Araujo’s comeback will also be great news as Inigo Martinez requires a much needed breather.
Next up, Barça hosts Atletico at The Olympic Luis stadium. A good win will not only boost player morale, but also snatch the in-hand game advantage of Atletico De Madrid. You can enjoy some good analysis of this upcoming clash here.
